Thursday 7th October – How does computer a computer make music?

Every now and then somebody asks me:  ’how do you write a song?’.  The way they usually ask is as if writing a song is some kind of strange alien alchemy so far removed from anything that not even Gandalf could begin to contemplate it.  Well, of course that’s rubbish, it just takes knowledge that anyone can gather…

As some of you know due to me rattling on incessantly about it, I have just purchased a new Apple Mac Pro to further equip myself in my music/sound making/recording quest..  and this provoked a very similar question from a friend… He asked ‘How do you actually make music on a computer?’.  And he actually sounded totally baffled…  It seems that this can also be a point of bewilderment… So, I thought that I should talk a little about it just in case some one out there is interested in giving it a go but is a little intimidated….  For those of you that make music on a computer, this is all very, very basic but please do contribute in a comment if you feel like it….

Recording software works like traditional methods of recording similar to what the elder of you may have used with cassette tapes… You put something in, you mess around with it if you want, it comes out again….  You will need an audio-interface which is a posh sound card attached via USB (not actually that expensive).  It has mic and instrument lead inputs plus connections for your speakers (aka monitors).  You can then record these inputs into your software together or one at a time.  This means that you can record a drum track, then a bass-line, then a guitar melody separately and then play them back complete as one. Magic eh.  Choosing your kit and recording space is very important here and this comes with experience but you can get good results with a bit of thought.

‘But how do you get a drum-kit in your pokey flat..?’  Was my friend’s next question.

Well, I don’t need to do that…. I actually have some software that does that for me.  Well, it doesn’t move an entire drum-kit into my flat exactly….!  I use something called BFD2 and the people that made this took the time to record hundreds of drum hits on various different drums at many hit ‘strengths’ with different microphones placed in different places.  You can control how far away these mics are from your ‘drum-kit’ by twiddling on-screen knobs.  You can then ‘play’ these different drums using an electronic kit or by assigning different drums to different notes on your attached (musical) keyboard.  As long as you understand how a drum-kit is used this is all pretty easy.  The same goes for any software ‘instrument’ or synthesiser that you can get hold of… I’m looking to pack an orchestra into my computer soon…!

There are then other bits and pieces you can use to make all your different parts fit in together and sound clearer, or you can just use them to make things sound crazy!  This is a large area and not necessary to get you started but if anybody wants me to talk about those in the future just ask…

One bit of kit that I find particularly cool is something that generates reverb (or echo).  This enables you to make your recording sound like it is being played in a huge concert hall, a small broom cupboard and everything in-between.  The best type is something called convolution reverb where actual spaces are sampled using a sound source and microphone, meaning you can use such real spaces as church catacombs!  Some even allow you to sample your own spaces!  You then twiddle knobs to put as little or as much of this effect on as you need to make it sound natural or fantastical.

Of course, it helps if you play an instrument or two but it isnt 100% necessary…. you can use pre-recorded samples, place notes graphically on your computer’s display or just record street sounds and manipulate them into music… If you can imagine it you can do it….  You need the right gear but basically, anyone can make music using a computer…  Your work may not sound like Vivaldi but it is still very fun!

Well, this has been a very simple and basic introduction to computer music-making, and I’ve mentioned just a few of the things that you can do…  If there is call for it I could always expand upon this post…

As a final thought, all I will say is that if music interests you, think of all sounds as music and all music as just sounds… With this in mind, you will have an endless supply of material and so-called musos will not intimidate you against giving it a go… There can be much snobbery with music-making…..

Tuesday 20th April

Sad news comes with Alex leaving Lunar Rising after playing violin for us for about a year and a half. We’re all very sad to see her go and will miss her greatly but wish her luck in her move to France. There are lots of fond memories of messing around at practice (gypsy disco being a firm favourite) and alex turning up just in time for soundchecks at gigs. Always reliable no matter what work threw at her!

As a move date is still unknown, Alex gave us good warning of her move allowing for a smooth change-over and will stay with us until we have a new violin player. There is one violinist that looks very promising but more on her later…

Other news from me comes in the form of my possible upgrade from an Apple Mac G5 recording system to a Mac Pro. Rumours are everywhere on the net about a new Mac Pro release being imminent so I’m using patience… However, a chat with a salesman at John Lewis revealed that they are no longer stocking most of the current Mac Pro models.. Maybe they are clearing way for a new introduction…? I will still be using Logic Studio but the new processing power will allow me to venture into orchestration software and make my recording experience far more stable.

Wednesday 14th April

It can be very difficult finding enough time for everything sometimes. I’m involved in two bands, a recording collaboration, my own song-writing project, a girlfriend, a will to improve my guitar playing and recording skills, a full-time job, an interest in improving my general knowledge, learning another language… Oh and a social-life too… My job starts early so I’m up at 5am and generally get home at 6.30pm, my only saving grace being the extra day off I get during the week. I think Winston Churchill once said that you can please some of the people some of the time but you can’t please all of the people all of the time; that is pretty relevant for me as each thing demands my attention and no one thing gets the attention it deserves… Wish they taught me time management at school instead of geography..

Thursday 8th April

Just on my usual work walk to Canada Water tube and it’s a lovely spring morning. Nice clear air and lots of bird song… Something some people don’t believe happens in London!

Yesterday’s song mixing didn’t go too well really, the song I’m going to get assesed at the Songwriters Guild sounded great until the afternoon.. The verse sounds too hurried and it’s kinda unsettling. It’s a problem that some thought I had with a Henry Spencer Project song so I’m thinking something must be up with the way I do things sometimes. I’ll be looking at the beat first to sort that so hopefully it’ll get sorted! My Mac crashed again last night too so I may have to return the new RAM I bought too…

On the upside I think I sorted a continueing problem with my new BFD2 drum software! It has been becoming unusable due to an apparent lack of CPU power. Determined as ever I wouldn’t let it beat me so after some suggestions on the Fxpansion forums (the makers of BFD2) not helping I checked out the Sound On Sound forum regarding the Apple G5. It turns out that contrary to popular belief the Mac may need fairly regular maintenance and after performing some tasks recommended here. It now seems to be running 90% smoothly! Follow the link for some great advice on getting the best out of your Apple Mac computer!

Also, Fruit Tree played a cracking gig again last Sunday. Kinasis were particulary good so I managed to get a free Cd after we played our set. Nice!

Fruit Tree are now in Debate about how we promote the band more. Our singer is reluctant to promote the band’s first album, ‘Sunset’, too much as she feels it is not represntative of our sound. I’m thinking that getting our name out there can only be a good thing.. . We should be getting a merch man to help us sell our wares at gigs though and will be paying them in beer so if anyone is interested get in touch… Finally, we are using some of our gig money this saturday to get some preoffesional photos taken at Hampsted Heath, should be fun!

Lunar Rising are back!

It has been a while but it looks like Lunar Rising are now ready for action once more! After around a year of drummer troubles it looks like we may have just found the perfect addition in the form of Pav… Pav is from Bulgaria and has lived in London for around six years. He is as excited to join the band as we are about him joining us and he fits in with all of us personally as well as musically. After the troubles we’ve had it seems too early to be getting this excited but I think he is here to stay! We are now complete with an 8-piece band (yep, 8!) consisting of Lead vocals, two backing singers, guitar, piano, violin, bass and now drums…

…So, what’s next..? Well, we also have a non-musical addition to the band in Marek who is a most excellent and artistic VJ and it looks like we have been offered a gig at the Borderline, London in June.. the perfect start for a come-back I reckon! Our new huge sound combined with some very evocative visuals in a large and respected venue… very exciting! watch this space…

A New Begining

Wow, two years or so since the last post…! If truth be told my blog stopped working and with all the bits and pieces I’ve been cultivating and taking a step up in the day job there just hasn’t been time to sort it!

Now I have found some stable musicians to work with and am getting far more productive with my music and general creativity, posts are going to be far more regular…

The website definately does need updating and it’s facelift will be happening as soon as my pal Jasal has sorted his computer problems.

So, the latest thing to happen is Henry Spencer Project which is the fruition of random ideas that have been floating around since I first started making music. I wanted the songs to be focused on rhythm whilst being basic yet atmospheric with the rawness I love from those old 1960′s funk recordings.. Pia Berg then came along to lend her amazing vocal talent and managed to give a lovely soulful glaze over the songs… They are yet to be finalised but have been made public so that you good people can give me some feedback on improvements needed! In a couple of weeks I will sort out the imperfections, get them mastered and see what I an do with them!

Transient Update

You may or may not know that a couple of our musical projects kinda died last year.  Yeah, sad isn’t it  but before you reach for the tissue box be consoled by the fact that some new and improved things are rising out of the ashes of the dearly departed!

Firstly, Finding Luna are now called Rising Lunar and can be found at http://www.Myspace.com/LunarRising where there are re-recordings of a couple of oldies as well as some new songs!  Dominique Allan is the new ultra-talented singer and we are currently waiting for our new piano/synth guy to finish touring with his folk band so we can finish off the songs.  In the meantime Dom and myself will be playing at some open mic nights in London so if you are about please do come down and have a beer or ten with us.  I will keep you posted on dates/venues.

Secondly, yeah Ephemeral bit the dust I’m afraid! but the downloads are still available on the site.  However, a new much improved project is currently under construction.  It will still be funky but loads more sophisticated… there is no name as yet though so please email me some suggestions and if we pick yours I may even buy you a beer or two! Cool eh.

Lastly, Fruit Tree have been recording their new EP and there are even rumors of getting the band together to do some gigs sometime this year (band members are either now mums or travelling the world…and I think one is still unsure of his identity after a pretty heavy night on the vodka six months ago…  You can still download their older songs from the site though and if you want to order the full album Sunset… please let me know.  We get double the money for it if you buy direct from us rather than through the shops!

There are also some other exciting plans on the horizon that we will be working hard towards but let’s not overload you all with information, it’s a Sunday and who wants to think on a Sunday…  Relax and go listen to the new Lunar RIsing song instead….
