This week, I really wanted to get a new song up here but the song I’m working on just doesn’t seem to work…. This is annoying but it’s no cause for alarm as this happens every now and then, it’s just one of those things! I have tried to mess around with the song in various different ways but something I just cant put my finger on is causing it to not sound right…
However, I promised a song to those on my mailing list so here is one anyway! It is a remix of a song that I co-wrote probably 3 to 4 years ago. A singer called Jacqueline Rolston came to me with the song and some basic chords and I fleshed it out with the production, which I polished up for my own enjoyment a few months back. I personally like the song due to the calming and laid-back vibe sitting next to something pretty funky… but yeah, see what you think… Here it is:
As with every trouble, a lesson can be learnt from this…. Being ruthless with my own songs is something that I am getting better and better at and I’m sure this is a major contribution to my improvement… In my opinion, in any situation, it is very important to be self-critical and continually re-evaluate your work and this particularly applies to anything creative… Is it still having the desired effect? Is it still saying what you wanted to say? Has the idea evolved into something totally different? Is it wise to cut your losses and start something else with a fresh mind? You can always come back to your current idea or even use it in something else…
Be brave and tell yourself that you have done something crap… but don’t wallow in self-pitty! Think about why it is crap then figure out how you can stop it being crap. Simples. With this troublesome song, I’m going to leave it for a few weeks and then build it again from the ground up. I will decide what part of the song is the most important to it’s vibe and continue it based upon this… This way, I would have kept the vital elements of the song and I will be thinking of the problem with a fresh mind and a few week’s extra experience… I’m certain this will produce something I am happy with!
I love your new vesion of this one Jay.
